Adelie Penguin Where it lives  They live in Antarctica and on many different islands off the coast. What it eats They eat fish and krill. They don't drink water, but eat snow. They have a gland in their nose that takes the salt out of the ocean water. They swallow ocean water when they catch fish. What it looks like Their head is all black with a white ring around their eye. They have long tail feathers that drag on the ground when they walk.They have a white belly and a black back. Feathers cover most of the short beak. Weight They weigh about 8 or 9 pounds. Height They are about 24 inches tall. Interesting facts They are the smallest of the Antarctic penguins. The male penguin takes care of the egg. They build nests of stones, and will fight over the best rocks. They are powerful swimmers. They can jump straight out of the water onto the land. They love to sled down icey hills on their bellies. They are very playful. Baby Adelie penguins grow the fastest of all penguins. Leopard seals are their biggest enemy.  



African Penguin Where it lives They live on the coast of South Africa and in Namibia. What it eats They eat small fish. What it looks like They have a black upside down U-shape on their neck with black spots on their chest. They have black feet and brown eyes. Weight They weigh between 7 and 11 pounds. Height They are about 27 inches tall. Interesting facts They are also called the Blackfoot penguin. They are in danger because of oil spills off the coast of Africa. They make a loud braying sound. They build their nests under bushes or on sandy beaches. Both parents take care of the eggs and the baby chicks.  



Chinstrap Penguin Where it lives They live on large icebergs on the open ocean in the Antarctic region. What it eats They eat krill and fish. What it looks like They have a small black band that runs under their chin. They have a black bill. Their legs and feet are pink with black bottoms. Their eyes are reddish-brown. Weight They weigh about 9 to 14 pounds. Height They are about 28 to 30 inches tall. Interesting facts They are the most common penguins. They are the boldest penguin and are most likely to fight other penguins. They have a high pitched call. Both parents take care of the eggs.  



Emperor Penguin Where it lives They are only found on Antarctica. What it eats They eat fish and crustaceans such as crabs and shrimp. What it looks like They have a black head, chin and throat. They have patches of yellow on their throat and near their ears. They have short wings that help them to dive. They have brown eyes. Weight They weigh about 60 to 90 pounds. Height They are about 36 to 44 inches tall. Interesting facts It is the largest of all the penguins. This penguin lives in the harshest weather of any animal on our planet. The female penguin lays one egg and the male penguin keeps it on top of its feet to keep it warm. They do not make a nest. Males can lose half their weight while keeping an egg warm because he does not eat. The males stand together in a big huddle for up to 9 weeks. Emperor penguins can live for 20 years.  



Erect-crested Penguin Where it lives They live in New Zealand and islands nearby. What it eats Scientists think they eat crustaceans, but are not sure. What it looks like They have a crest of yellow feathers that sticks straight out above their brown eyes. Weight They weight about 6 to 7 pounds. Height They are about 25 inches tall. Interesting facts They make a lot of noise and are very social. They make their nests in rocky areas. Their nests are simple and made of a few stones and a little mud and grass. They are the only crested penguin that can raise and lower their feathers. These penguins are very rare.

 



Fiordland Penguin Where it lives They live on South Island near New Zealand in a temperate rainforest. What it eats They eat crustaceans like crabs and shrimp, octopus, squid and krill. What it looks like They have a long crest of bright yellow feathers on their heads. They have white streaks of feathers on their cheeks. They have reddish brown eyes. Weight They weight about 6 to 7 pounds. Height They are about 24 inches tall. Interesting facts They are shy and timid. Both parents take care of the eggs, but the male watches the chicks after they hatch. The female hunts for food. They are the most timid and rarest of the crested penguins.  



Galapagos Penguin Where it lives They live on the Galapagos Islands near the equator. What it eats They eat mostly small fish and squid. What it looks like They have a thin white band that runs under their chin. they have a black upside down horseshoe shape around their belly. They have brown eyes. Weight They weigh about 5 to 6 pounds. Height It is between 16 and 21 inches tall. Interesting facts They live the most north of all the penguins. Both parents take care of the eggs and the chicks. They keep cool by swimming and hunting for food in the cold water during the day. They protect their feet from getting sunburned by holding their flippers over them when on land. They are endangered.  



Gentoo Penguin Where it lives They live on many islands in the Antarctic, but the main colony is on the Falklands. What it eats They eat krill and small fish. What it looks like They have a wide white stripe over the tops of their heads in a triangle shape. They have a very bright orange beak and a black tail. They have orange feet. Weight They weigh about 10 to 14 pounds. Height They are about 30 to 35 inches tall. Interesting facts They make their nests in tall grasses and never in snow. They will fight other penguins for the best stones to use in their nests. Both parents take care of the eggs. They are very noisy.  



Humboldt Penguin Where it lives They live on the western coasts of Peru and Chile. What it eats They eat small fish, squid and small shrimp. What it looks like They have a thick black upside down horseshoe shape on their belly. The skin of their face is pink and the beak is black. They have pink and black feet and reddish brown eyes. They have long flippers. Weight They weigh between 6 and 11 pounds. Height They are about 18 to 24 inches tall. Interesting facts They nest in underground burrows. They are endangered. Their droppings, called "guano" is used for fertilizer.  



King Penguin Where it lives They are found on many sub-Antarctic islands. What it eats They eat mostly fish and squid and some crustaceans such as shrimp and crabs. What it looks like They have orange spots near their ears and on their neck. They have a white belly, a grey back and black head. Their bill is long and thin. They have black feet and grey eyes. Weight They weigh about 30 to 45 pounds. Height They are about 37 inches tall. Interesting facts It is the second largest of all the penguins. They are very social. The King penguin runs with its feet and doesn't hop on land. They do not build a nest. Parents keep the egg warm against their stomachs and on their feet. The baby chicks can grow larger than their parents. They lay only one egg at a time. The baby chicks have fuzzy brown feathers for about a year after they are born.

Where it lives They live in New Zealand and southern Australia. What it eats They eat small fish, squid and sometimes shrimp. What it looks like Their feathers are a bluish color. They have a white belly and grey eyes. Their feet are pink. Weight They weigh about 2 to 3 pounds. Height They are about 10 to 12 inches tall. Interesting facts They are the smallest of all the penguins. They build their nests between rocks or inside caves. They have more songs than any other penguin.  



Macaroni Penguin Where it lives They live in the sub-Antarctic islands. They also live on small islands off South America and southern Africa. What it eats They eat mostly krill with small amounts of squid. What it looks like They have yellow and black feathers sticking out of the side of their heads. They have solid black feathers on the cheeks and under the chin. Their feet are pink on the top and black on the bottom. They have red or brown eyes. Weight They weigh about 9 to 13 pounds. Height They are about 28 inches tall. Interesting facts Both parents take care of the egg, but once it hatches, the male takes care of the baby chick. The female goes out to find food. They spend most of their time in the water. Their colonies are huge.

 



Magellanic Penguin Where it lives They live on the coasts of Argentina and Chile, and the Falkland Islands. What it eats They eat squid and small fish. What it looks like They have a black face with a thick white circle around it. They also have a thick black strip like an upside down horseshoe on their stomach. Their feet are black with pink patches. They have brown eyes. Weight They weigh around 7 to 22 pounds. Height They are about 14 to 22 inches tall. Interesting facts They were named after the famous explorer Magellan. They are the largest of the warm water penguins. They burrow and build their nests underground. They are very shy and often hide in their nests. Both parents take care of the eggs and the baby chicks when they hatch. When the weather gets warm they lose the feathers around their eyes. They grow back when it gets cold again.  



Rockhopper Penguin Where it lives They live on most of the islands in the Antarctic. What it eats They eat squid, krill and other small fish. What it looks like They have yellow tufts of feathers on their black heads. They have red or brown eyes and sharp beaks. Their backs are black and their stomachs are white. Their feet are pink on the top and black on the bottom. Weight They weigh between 5 and 8 pounds. Height They are about 18 to 23 inches tall. Interesting facts They are the smallest of the crested penguins. They can hop from rock to rock. They keep both feet together when hopping. They can hop up to four or five feet! They are loud and noisy. They are quick to attack anyone or anything that bothers them. After the egg hatches, the male takes care of the chick while the female goes to find food.  



Royal Penguin Where it lives They live on Antarctica and surrounding islands. They breed on Macquarie Island south of Australia. What it eats They eat krill, fish and small amounts of squid. What it looks like They have yellow orange and black feathers on the top of their heads. This is the only crested penguin to have a white face and throat. They have a black back. Their eyes are reddish-brown. Weight They weigh about 12 pounds. Height They are about 26 inches tall. Interesting facts They both take care of the eggs, and after it hatches, the male takes care of the chick while the female searches for food. They build their nests by making a shallow hole in the sand or weeded area. Their nests are in large colonies on open beaches. The female lays two eggs, but kicks the first egg out of the nest. They are excellent swimmers, sometimes swimming 20 miles per hour.

 



Snares Penguin Where it lives They live on Snares Island or the southern coast of New Zealand. What it eats They eat krill, squid and fish. What it looks like Their face, cheeks, throat and back are black. They have a heavy, thick orange bill and all black cheek feathers. They have a yellow and white feathered crest on the top of their heads. Their eyes are reddish-brown. They have pink feet. Weight They weigh about 6 to 7 pounds. Height They are about 25 inches tall. Interesting facts They are the only penguins that roost in low trees. Both parents take care of the egg, but the male takes care of the chick when it hatches. The female searches for food. They nest in a forest or in shaded areas.  



Yellow-eyed Penguin Where it lives They live on the coast of New Zealand. What it eats They eat small fish and squid. What it looks like Their bodies are dark grey. They have yellow orange eyes. They also have a band of yellow feathers on their heads. It does not have a crest. Their feet are pink on the top and black on the bottom. Weight They weigh about 10 to 13 pounds. Height They are about 21 inches tall. Interesting facts It is the rarest of all penguins. They live in forests under thick vegetation. They nest apart from each other. They are very endangered. They are the third largest penguin. Both parents take care of the eggs and the baby chicks when they hatch.
